Congratulations to senior Margaret Smith on receiving the Saint Michael’s Award for the Class of 2020 presented by Sgt. Nicholas Barragan of the California Army National Guard.
The award is presented to an SJM senior who:
- Understands the importance of the community;
- Is prepared to serve their community in more than one way;
- Is well-rounded in the areas of academics, community service, commitment, and
physical fitness.
At other schools, this award is called the Minuteman Award, but the Guard decided to rename the award for SJM to better recognize achievement in a Catholic school. Saint Michael is the Patron Saint of the Military, Police, Firefighters, and Paramedics.
Last April, the faculty and staff were asked to nominate members of the class of 2020 to be interviewed for the award. SJM nominated Grace Baker, Stephen Cantelmi, Taylor DaSilva, Bridget Douglas, Matthew Garza, Ivan Manriquez, Chloe Paraguya, and Margaret Smith. The nominees submitted their resumes and participated in an interview with representatives of the National Guard.
At mass on Wednesday, Oct. 23, the eight seniors were recognized by Sgt. Barragan for their excellence in scholarship, citizenship, service, and physical fitness. He said every senior nominated was outstanding on their own merits, and he was very impressed with the entire group.
