Sophomore Ethan Quinn landed like a hurricane at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus in Orlando, Florida in January and didn’t look back. Quinn dominated a field of 128 players without the loss of a set, winning his first USTA gold ball at the Winter Nationals for the Boys 16s title.
“I think focusing on my match and being determined not to lose the next point no matter the score, were the key components to my win,” commented Quinn. “It’s wonderful and truly a great experience. It let me know that my hard work on and off the court is paying off.”
The blue chip sophomore, who lists Novak Djokovic as his favorite player, ended his stay in Orlando by claiming a 3rd place bronze ball in the Boys 16s doubles tournament. “I love doubles,” Quinn said. “I love getting to use my hands and touch and getting to use angles and open the court.”
Quinn, who lists Texas, UNC, Stanford, Oklahoma and Georgia as his top choices for college, stresses that doubles should always be a top priority. “In college, doubles is just as important as the singles matches.”
Quinn, who enjoys cliff jumping and cooking/baking as his off-court hobbies, is hoping 2020 is a big year. Among his goals is playing more International Tennis Federation Junior and Men’s events and securing an ATP point. Quinn played his first ITF Futures tournament in November, falling to former collegiate No. 1 Michael Shabaz, 7-5, 7-6(4).
“I want to become a more rounded and better player,” Quinn said. “I’m planning on playing many more ITFs to try and get into the Junior Grand Slams.”
