They are friends for LIFE….literally! Not only did they grow up attending Catholic school together, these four San Joaquin Memorial lady alums have been instrumental in the Right to Life of Central California cause for many years. The Fab Four - Cathy Horn, Gina Fry, Diane Mazzoni and Lisa Garver - were recently honored for their dedicated service at the annual Right to Life dinner in December.
Their friendship began as young students at Our Lady of Victory elementary school and continued to blossom at Memorial, according to Cathy Horn. “Diane and I are SJM sifters, she is the Class of ‘80 and I’m ‘85,” explained Cathy. “We met Gina when we were all students at OLV, and Lisa and I became lifelong close friends when we met on the first day of 3rd grade. Gina and Lisa are more like family than friends; they both worked for my mother when she owned a business in our younger years.”
For as long as Cathy can remember, “Diane and I have been involved in Right to Life cause. My father served on the board and was auction chairperson back in the 90’s on up until 2006,” she said. “In order to increase auction profits, our father invested his time and resources to pay for, prepare, and serve dinner for the 1,000 attendees. Together, our family along with some friends, prepared the dinner and served at the auction for many years. We did it until my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was unable to continue.”
According to Cathy, “After my mother’s passing, the Right to Life of Central California renamed their annual golf tournament in memory of our mother, JoAnn Stephens. After a few years of letting our hearts heal, Diane and I agreed to become golf tournament chairpersons. As soon as they heard, Gina and Lisa joined our committee and together the four of us have spent the last five years working to grow the success of the tournament each year.”
This hard working, dedicated foursome is very passionate about Right to Life. “We will continue to serve God and our community in this very important way for as long as we are able to do it,” Cathy added. “We hope people will support the golf tournament when they hear our story.”
The Right to Life golf tournament titled “The JoAnn Stephens Memorial Golf for Life,” is slated for Monday, April 27, at Fort Washington Country Club.
