Congratulations are in order for SJM senior Tobin Phillips on being selected one of the 2019-2020 CIF Central Section Scholar Athlete Award winners!
Tobin has been a leader on the field as well as in the classroom, according to SJM Athletic Director Steve Ferdinandi. “His dedication, work ethic, and respectful demeanor are only a few of his many exemplary qualities. He was a captain of the football team, a leader on the track team, All-CMAC, and All-State.”
His outstanding achievements and standard of excellence extend even further than the field of play. “Tobin is one of the top students at Memorial and the true definition of a ‘student-athlete,’” Ferdinandi said. “He has done all this while volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club, in addition to taking a multitude of honors and AP courses.”
To qualify for the award, the applicant must be a graduating senior, possess no less than a 3.25 cumulative grade point average, have participated in two varsity sports in the Central Section for at least two years and have a record of good citizenship, according to the CIF Central Section selection committee. Candidates were judged on: Athletic Prowess-50%; Academic Achievement-35%; and Community Involvement-15%
“I am very excited and honored to be selected as a CIF Central Scholar Athlete. This selection means a great deal to me as it is a reflection of the many years of hard work I have put into both my academic and athletic careers,” said Tobin. “ I attribute this selection to the great teachers and coaches at SJM who challenged me and taught me to become the student athlete that I am today.”
Tobin is one of our many exceptional student-athletes at Memorial, and what makes our school unique, added Ferdinandi. “We are proud of Tobin and are happy to see him receive this remarkable recognition.”
