SJM Welcomes New Girls Basketball Coach
Newly appointed Girls Head Basketball Coach Cory Fischer has high expectations for the future of the program. Although this is his first time coaching girls, Fischer has extensive experience coaching boys basketball in the Valley since 1999.
In 2017, Fischer stepped up to serve as interim head coach at Clovis High and then moved on to coach alongside former SJM boys coach, Pat Gile. Although Fischer believes that his attention to detail and demand for hard work is what he offers to the program, he says his biggest incoming asset is his staff.
Mike Perawly is Fischer’s Associate Head Coach. “The only thing Perawly is better at than coaching is actually playing the game of basketball,” says Fisher. Perawly won two State titles at Fresno City before moving on to play at Fresno Pacific.
Rounding out the staff includes Steve Scheiline who serves as Director of Team Operations; he and Fischer coached together at Clovis High for over 10 years. Fischer is also happy to have Ponisha Yance as an assistant coach. Yance won three Valley Championships while playing for CMAC conference opponent, Edison High in the 90’s. She is also known for scoring 49 points in a game while at Edison.
To cap off his high powered coaching staff, Fischer brought on Noele Felix. Felix is an Engelwood native but played at Fresno State during the Jerry Tarkanian era. He played professionally for a number of years with the Seattle Sonics and then overseas in Jerusalem.
“My staff and I are joining a very talented group of young ladies. We’re ready to lead them while focusing on the small details that lead to success,” adds Fischer.
Malcolm Boone Named New Girls Soccer Coach
Malcolm Boone was recently named SJM’s new Girls Soccer Coach and he’s excited about the opportunity.
Boone has an impressive soccer background that he brings to the table. He was an assistant coach with the Central California Soccer Alliance youth club for the last several years, and served as an assistant coach for the Memorial girls program for the last two years.
Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Boone attended Jesuit College Prep. He played soccer on two state championship teams and also participated in club soccer in the Dallas area. Boone attended Catawba College in Salisbury, NC, and majored in Psychology; he was a member of the men’s soccer team that made two appearances in the NAIA national finals.
“I’m very excited to take over the head coaching role from Rick Martinez and build on the legacy he helped establish over his long career at SJM,” said Boone. “We have a great group of girls returning and incoming freshman; I look forward with optimism to see what the season will bring.”
